THE DIAMOND DIVA BLOG

THE GREEK DIAMOND

Everything in the world (and by the world, I mean, Manhattan) is circular. No matter what happens, everything always comes back to where it started. Diamonds, relationships and bellbottoms come and go, but they always come back around when you least expect it. My friend Susan has been engaged about a million times. www.gettingengaged.typepad.com You know those women who always have a new purse? Well, Susan always has a new diamond and a new fiancé. She can make a whole club go completely silent when she arrives. She’s one of those women you hate because you can’t help but like her, while still being completely jealous.

Her many fiancés have given her many a fine ring. A princess cut from the Spanish prince, an emerald sparkler from a Goldman Sachs investment banker, a three-carat round brilliant from some actor during his fifteen minutes of fame. And the list goes on. (http://www.theleodiamond.com/diamond-shapes.html)

I was lunching with Susan a few weeks ago at Periyali, (http://www.periyali.com/about.html) an upscale Greek restaurant in the village. I spotted a new stunner on her finger. A magnificent yellow canary diamond. http://www.williamgoldberg.com/ It was luminous, it was outrageous, it was… déjà vu! I had seen that ring before, briefly, about two years ago, on… SUSAN’S FINGER! When I asked her about it she laughed, informing me that Alexandro (her current Greek shipping heir whose parents obviously had lofty aspirations for him) knew her taste so well that he had picked out a ring that she herself had picked out with her last Greek shipping heir, Spiro (whose parents seemed to be a little more realistic about the life of a Greek shipping heir in Manhattan).

But it turns out that women aren’t the only ones who are jealous when it comes to Susan. The other night Susan and Alexandro were enjoying some fabulous Bellinis (http://www.drinkboy.com/cocktails/recipes/Bellini.html) at the uber-trendy Crobar, when all of a sudden Spiro walked in, slightly intoxicated. He saw Susan and Alexandro together and spotted the ring on Susan’s finger. Susan and Alexandro both greeted Spiro and Alexandro was furious. How did Susan know Spiro? It turns out that Susan’s new engagement ring wasn’t new at all! It was the exact same ring that she was rocking a year before, with Spiro! I guess these heirs don’t just share women, they share jewelry! Alexandro had bought the ring off Spiro and given it to Susan. Susan experienced the wrath of the thunder god when he ripped the ring off of her hand, threw it at Susan, the yellow diamond achieving the perfect thunderbolt effect when it caught the lights from the dance floor.

Susan learned a valuable lesson from this. Not only are there not that many diamonds in the world, but there aren’t that many men who you want to put them on your finger. And if you’re not careful, you may end up right back where you started. Making people stop dead in their tracks when you enter a bar with your ex-fiancé’s ring on your left hand.

Of course, she didn’t return it this time, it seems that she was meant to have it.

The gods work in mysterious ways.
